STRIKE: STUDENTS JOIN AS ASUU PROTEST, CALLS FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF AGREEMENT WITH FG (PHOTOS)





The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has once again urged the Federal Government to address the nine demands that were presented to them by the Union.

This plea was emphasized by the University of Jos branch of ASUU during a peaceful protest in the State Capital on Tuesday.

Dr. Jurbe Molwus, the Chairperson of ASUU at the University of Jos, expressed disappointment in the government’s failure to fulfill past agreements with the Union.

Dr. Molwus stressed the importance of the government honoring their commitments to enhance the quality of education in the country and called for measures to regulate the number of universities in Nigeria.

Molwus, who was represented by the branch’s Vice Chairperson, Prof. Kiri Jaryum, said:


“We are calling on the government to immediately pay all Earned Academic Allowances of our members, which was captured in the 2023 budget.

“We demand the immediate release of the Revitalisation Fund which was also captured in the 2023 budget.

“We demand for immediate payment of unpaid salaries of various months of our members, who were excluded or omitted from the payroll of the IPPIS.

“We demand for the immediate payment of the balance of our three and a half months withheld salaries.

“We demand payment of arrears and Responsibility Allowance to our entitled members.

“We call for a return to the renegotiation table to implement the Mimi Briggs report.

“We demand the immediate removal of ASUU from IPPIS as directed by the Federal Executive Council since October 2023”, he maintained.

“We call for the reinstatement of the Governing Councils of public universities that were illegally removed by the Bola Tinubu-led government, in particular, those whose tenure has not elapsed; they are free to constitute those who have exhausted their tenure”.

In response, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, the Vice Chancellor of the University, commended ASUU for their peaceful protest.

“I can assure you that this letter that you have brought with these nine demands for onward transmission to the federal government, will be transmitted verbatim”, he assured.

Meanwhile, the SUG President, University of Jos chapter, Comrade Sambo Nancwat Peter, who led some students to protest alongside ASUU, said as a student union, they had to support ASUU because their demands remained.
